Huh. No whites of eyes. Iris goes straight to the edge. Is it just humans that have whites, I wonder?

I wonder why cats are the only felines with vertical pupils... At least as far as I know.

By cats, do you mean housecats? All felines are cats and all cats are felines, so you shouldn't say cats. It's not just housecats, it's all the small cats. That includes mountain lions for instance, which are the biggest of the small cats. As to why, I think it's a matter of both genes existing in many if not all mammals, and one is in effect if the other one is defective. Because it makes no sense that you would have irises that work perfectly but in a completely different way in such close relatives, that's not something evolution should be able to accomplish using a mutation so fast. They all have the defective gene for the sweet taste buds, they still have the taste buds for it, but they just don't work, so if that hasn't undergone any significant optimization, I just don't think it's likely that wholly functional eye irises that work in a completely different way could develop and be debugged. I'm actually kind of surprised the creationists haven't jumped on board with trying to point to this as an example of why they think evolution is impossible, but if they did, I think my explanation where we all have the genes for both kinds but only one is active if the other isn't working is probably the answer to it. Then again, goats have rectangular irises (with the longest dimension the horizontal one) which is weirder still than slit or circle irises.

English is not my first language so it's possible feline wasn't the right word.

Also, since cats are such close relatives to humans, if my hypothesis holds true, that would mean YOU also have the genes for slit irises, they just aren't active because you have functional round iris genes which supersede them.

I wonder of anyone's made an eye of the tiger joke...
It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight. Rising up to the challenge of our rival. And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night. And he's watching us all in the eyeeeeeeeeeee of the tiger!

I had to...

Is it possible I could use this as a reference photo for a drawing? Full credit to you of course for the photo and of course I would link to it in the description ;)
